In 1994, a Missouri high school teacher named Rodney Wilson wanted to give students better access to ”+ history as well as more role models with whom they could identify. ”+ leaders from around the country, came together and Gay and Lesbian History Month was born.
The group selected October for what would become ”+ History Month because school would be in session. 十月也是我们庆祝国家出柜日的时候。 The two ”+ marches on Washington in 1979 and 1987 also took place in October.
In 1995, the National Education Association passed a resolution officially recognizing it as a commemorative month. In 2006, the civil rights organization Equality Forum became the official organizer and promoter of the month. 骄傲月在六月。 Pride originated with the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and is about uplifting the ”+ rights movement. Pride is more focused on the continued fight for ”+ rights, whereas ”+ History Month focuses on honoring the past.

- International Pronouns Day is about respecting, sharing, and educating others about personal pronouns. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people.
